How to Measure Tire Tread Depth on a Semi-Trailer Truck

How to Measure Tire Tread Depth on a Semi-Trailer Truck

We’ve created a tutorial on where and how to measure tire tread depth on a semi-truck. This helps measure the life of the tire so you can perform preventative maintenance. The Department of Transportation also requires a certain tread depth for your tires when in use because when tires hit a certain depth, or become bald, they are considered more dangerous on the road. Here are those requirements:

Steer Tires: New steer tires should come in between 18/32″-22/32″. The DOT’s legal limit for steer tires are 4/32″. Anything below this is considered out of service.

Drive Tires: New drive tires should come in between 22/32″-32/32″. The DOT’s legal limit for drive tires are 2/32″. Anything below this is considered out of service.

Trailer Tires: New trailer tires should come in between 12/32″-14/32″. The DOT’s legal limit for trailer tires are 2/32″. Anything below this is considered out of service.

Airline Replacement on Semi Truck

Airline Replacement on Semi Truck

Over the last couple of days, I hooked up to 3 different trailers. Each, I thought, had faulty airlines. While I was putting a new pogo stick on the back of my truck, I noticed the tube of my service line was broke. Turns out, the problem wasn’t with the trailers, the problem was with THE TRUCK!! Prior to getting my dump trailer, I only pulled my Texas Bragg Gooseneck with this truck. My gooseneck is has electric brakes because it was spec’d to be pulled with my pick up truck. So, I have not had to use the airlines. Fortunately, I caught it before it had me stranded out on the road somewhere. Or delayed me from getting to work on time…

Blue Bird got some Replacement Rear Tires

Blue Bird got some Replacement Rear Tires

Replaced the very old and aged 10R22.5 recaps on the rear with some mildly used 295/75R22.5 tires from the drive axles of a semi truck. These tires are virgin and can be regrooved and recapped at some point. Also found out this bus is definitely a highway cruiser!

Also, special thanks to DJ for picking up the remaining seat covers to get to Chris to bring to me!

At 5700 miles, the windshield on my 2019 STI is cracked. I called Safelite Auto Glass to do a windshield replacement. I recorded the process and think you might find it interesting. It’s a lot of work but this guy makes it look easy.

Before recording this footage, the tech from Safelite gave me his permission to record the windshield replacement process. I love my new Subaru WRX STI and make videos to document things about it so I appreciated the opportunity to record this video.

Many people have found this video before they called Safelite and thanked me for posting this detailed video which shows the onsite windshield replacement process.

It’s a long video but you really get to see every part of the windshield replacement.

Thanks for watching and commenting!
