Hey guys, Justin here with The Four Lazy J’s. In this video I review my Patriot Tires Torque mud terrains. The same ones you find on that Diesel Brothers tv show on Discovery. I first purchased my Ram 2500 with the cummins back in December of 2015. Shortly after that I put the leveling kit on it and started shopping for aftermarket wheels and tires. I first looked into the Toyo Open Country tires then somehow I stumbled upon these. Being the researcher that I am, I started to gather as much information on Patriot Tires as I could (which wasn’t much truthfully.) I had heard that they were made specifically for larger and heavier trucks. So I decided that they were competitively priced which made it worth a shot. I had BFG all terrains on my old half ton and had to replace them about every 30,000 miles. That kid of set the standard for me. Now that I have 20,000 miles on the Patriots, they seem as if they could at least go another 20,000 with ease. It must be true that they are built with a much sturdier compound. I have used them in deep nasty much and sharp jagged rocks out hunting and they do what they say they would do, work and hold up. I can honestly say that I am a believer. I took a chance on these things and I would buy another set in a heart beat. There is still a lack of information on these tires and feel like if they could get that ironed out, they could be a contender in the off road tire market. If you are trying to take your 4×4 out in the mud, your stock tires are going to be completely useless! Just look at this guy trying to get through a little mud in street tires. (
Now, you don’t need to start setting up the winch just yet. First, let’s figure out how to pick out some mud tires for your rig.
We get it, if you’re just getting into 4 – wheeling the number of options for off-road can be mind numbing.
Today we’re going break down the different types of off-road tires there are and how to pick the right one for your rig.
So let’s get started.
There are 5 types of tires we are going to go through ranging from the best at performing on the asphalt to the best in the mud.
Unfortunately, there is no tire that is the absolute best in every vehicle condition. If you get slicks, you’ll have the best performance for the street but absolutely terrible performance for just about anything else. The same is true when you’re talking about off-road tires.
So think about what you’ll be using your 4×4 when choosing the what type of off-road tire hits your sweet spot.
The first type of tire is the one you probably have on right now, you’re stock or OE tire. You already like how they handle on the highway but they are useless when you get into some real mud.
If you want to even begin tackling light mud you’ll need to at least bump it up to an All Terrain tire. Tires like the BF Goodrich All Terrain are your versatile, jack of all trade tire. They will perform good on the street and tackle light off-road terrain, but don’t expect serious performance on any surface from them.
Even though an All Terrain is a huge step up from your stock tire, it isn’t suitable for much more than light off road use. If you really want performance in the mud, getting a Mud Terrain tire is a must.
Tires like the Toyo Open Country MT bring better off-road performance without sacrificing any semblance of ride quality. While Mud Tires will get you a lot further at your local mud hole, they’ll also be louder when you’re out on the highway. If you want high performance in the mud that you can still take on the highway, a mud terrain tire is the way to go.
These tires have larger tread blocks with more space in between each block than an all terrain. When you are out in the mud your tire tread is going to be packed with mud. An all-terrain tire won’t be able to self-clean or grip like a Mud Terrain tire will, leaving you much more likely to get stuck. Plus, the more aggressive tread patterns look pretty badass.
Now, most of us can stop at a Mud Tire and be happy with the off-road performance, but for those who want to take it a step further there’s your Extreme Terrain tires. Tires like the Nitto Mud Grappler represent a zero compromise solution for off-road use. They are perfect for the mud and rocks, but terrible for highway driving.
To take mudding to the ultimate extreme, you can get a speciality tire. Tires like the Super Swamper Bogger don’t just compromise on-the-road performance, they spec their tires just for one off-road application and forget everything else. However, if you are at all concerned about street performance, speciality tires will be mind-numbingly loud, wear out quickly on the highway, and lack lateral grip. If you want to make a full-time mudding rig, a speciality tire is the only way to go!
Those are all the types of off-road tires to choose from. Once you decide how much on and off road performance you need, you should be able to pick one for your rig. For most of us who want to get serious in the mud, a mud terrain tire is the sweet spot, but some of you may want to go more or less extreme depending on your needs.
Picked up a set of Ironman A/T from online for $442! Not bad for a set of truck tires plus with free shipping! I had them installed by a shop. After driving them in the rain and on dry road they do great. Haven’t tried them out in mud yet but my cousin has the same tires on his jeep and he said they grip well in mud. The tires are also quiet and has a smooth ride! There installed on a 99 Dodge Ram 1500 4WD known as the SuperRam!
