How to Measure Tire Tread Depth on a Semi-Trailer Truck

How to Measure Tire Tread Depth on a Semi-Trailer Truck

We’ve created a tutorial on where and how to measure tire tread depth on a semi-truck. This helps measure the life of the tire so you can perform preventative maintenance. The Department of Transportation also requires a certain tread depth for your tires when in use because when tires hit a certain depth, or become bald, they are considered more dangerous on the road. Here are those requirements:

Steer Tires: New steer tires should come in between 18/32″-22/32″. The DOT’s legal limit for steer tires are 4/32″. Anything below this is considered out of service.

Drive Tires: New drive tires should come in between 22/32″-32/32″. The DOT’s legal limit for drive tires are 2/32″. Anything below this is considered out of service.

Trailer Tires: New trailer tires should come in between 12/32″-14/32″. The DOT’s legal limit for trailer tires are 2/32″. Anything below this is considered out of service.
