I had the opportunity to disassemble a landing gear leg from a semi trailer recently and thought it would make a good video. There are two legs that work in tandem, a power leg and a slave leg. The power leg is where the hand crank is attached and it features two “gears”, high and low which are selected by sliding the crankshaft in or out. The slave leg has no gear reduction and depends on the mechanical advantage provided by the power leg. The power leg and slave leg are connected by a tube. High gear provides fast speed, but low mechanical advantage. Low gear provides high mechanical advantage, but slow speed. High gear is normally used to lower the legs to the ground before pulling the tractor out from under the trailer. If the trailer needs to be raised/lowered when the weight of the trailer is on the legs, low gear is used. Though low gear may provide mechanical advantage making it possible to raise/lower a loaded trailer, it is very difficult and requires a LOT of muscle power.
